Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles
Product Introduction
Fiberglass asphalt shingles (also called fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingles) are the most popular type of roofing shingle in North America and Europe, defined by a fiberglass mat core coated with asphalt and topped with mineral granules.
1. Structure & Composition
A typical shingle has 4 layers:
- Fiberglass Mat (Core)
- Non-combustible glass fiber web, provides tensile strength, dimensional stability, and fire resistance.
- Does not absorb water → no rot, warp, or mold.
- Asphalt Coating
- Oxidized or SBS-modified bitumen, waterproofs and bonds the mat and granules.
- Mineral Granule Surface
- Ceramic-coated stones, block UV rays, add color, and improve fire rating.
- Self-sealing Adhesive Strip
- Activated by sun heat, bonds shingles together for wind resistance.
2. Key Advantages
- Durability: 25–50 year lifespan (vs. 20–25 years for organic shingles).
- Fire Resistance: Class A fire rating (highest) due to non-combustible fiberglass core.
- Lightweight: ~1.8–2.3 lbs/ft² (8.8–11.2 kg/m²), reduces roof load and installation effort.
- Weather Resistance: Withstands -35°C to 90°C, resists cracking, curling, and fading.
- Low Maintenance: Resists algae, moss, and rot; easy to repair if damaged.
- Cost-Effective: Moderate upfront cost ($3–6/ft²) with long-term value.
