Organic Asphalt Shingles
Product Introduction
Organic asphalt shingles are traditional waterproof materials for pitched roofs. They take organic fiber mats (waste paper, wood pulp, cellulose, etc.) as the base, which are saturated with petroleum asphalt and topped with mineral granules. Once a mainstream roofing product, they have now been largely replaced by fiberglass asphalt shingles.
1. Core Composition
Base Mat: Made by pressing organic materials including recycled paper, wood pulp and cellulose. It is thick, heavy and features high asphalt absorption capacity.
Asphalt Saturation: Contains a high proportion of petroleum asphalt, around 40% more than fiberglass shingles. It delivers outstanding waterproof performance and great flexibility at low temperatures.
Mineral Granules: Colorful natural mineral granules on the surface provide UV resistance, weather durability and decorative effects.
Back Coating: Anti-stick separator to prevent adhesion during storage.
2. Key Features
Advantages
High Flexibility: Resists cracking in low temperatures, ideal for cold regions, and boasts excellent bend and crack resistance.
Good Waterproofing: High asphalt content ensures superior sealing performance and effective resistance against rainwater penetration.
Easy Installation: Can be fixed with nails or adhesive, easy to cut, suitable for complex roof shapes and allows fast construction.
Cost-Effective: Priced lower than metal shingles and slate tiles, with low overall costs.
Traditional Aesthetic: Features a solid, retro look that matches classical and rural-style buildings perfectly.
Disadvantages
Moisture Sensitivity: The organic base mat absorbs water. Prolonged exposure to moisture will cause curling, bulging, granule shedding and decay.
Poor Fire Resistance: Low fire rating (mostly Class C), and tends to soften and flow under high temperatures.
Shorter Lifespan: A service life of 15–20 years under normal conditions, and only 10–15 years in hot-humid or freeze-thaw environments.
Heavy Weight: Weighs approximately 15–20kg per square meter, increasing the load on the roof structure.
