Fire Rated Asphalt Shingles
Product Introduction
Fire-rated asphalt shingles are asphalt roofing products certified to meet external fire-resistance standards (UL 790 / ASTM E108), predominantly Class A (highest grade), designed to resist ignition, flame spread, and burning brand penetration—critical for wildfire-prone regions and code-compliant construction。
1. Core Fire-Resistant Construction
- Base Mat: Fiberglass (non-combustible, superior fire resistance vs. organic felt)
- Asphalt Coating: Fire-retardant modified asphalt (high softening point, low flammability)
- Top Surface: Mineral granules (crushed slate/quartz/ceramic; non-combustible, blocks heat/flame)
- Underlayment: Class A-rated synthetic or asphalt-saturated felt (enhances assembly fire resistance)
2. Key Testing Criteria (Class A Certification)
To earn Class A, shingles must pass:
- Burning Brand Test: Resists ignition from a 2×4 ft flaming wood brand (simulates wildfire embers)
- Flame Spread Test: Flame spread ≤6 ft; no continuous burning
- Intermittent Flame Test: Self-extinguishes after flame removal; no sustained combustion
- Ignition Temperature: ≥650°F (343°C)
3. Major Brands & Class A Lines
- GAF: Timberline HDZ, Royal Sovereign (Class A; ASTM D3462)
- Owens Corning: Duration, TruDefinition (Class A; UL 790)
- TAMKO: Heritage, Elite (Class A; UL 2218 impact + UL 790 fire)
- CertainTeed: Landmark, Presidential (Class A; high-wind + fire-rated)
- IKO: Cambridge, Dynasty (Class A; fiberglass mat)
